MediCubes: Design of a Health Monitoring Toy for Children

Lab project in the area of Virtual and Augmented Reality.

Keywords: Health monitoring, home monitoring, pervasive healthcare, storytelling toy, children, Tangible User Interface, sensors..

About this Project

Especially for children monitoring their health can result in a stressful situation, even when conducted at home by their parents. Current advances in sensing technology provide small non-invasive sensors with reasonable accuracy. Building upon the ACTO prototyping platform (https://www.ims.tuwien.ac.at/projects/acto), we investigate the possibility to integrate sensors for temperature, pulse, oxygen saturation, lung capacity and skin conductance into toys. Employing these toys in a storytelling game permits health parameters to be monitored in an unperceived way while playing. This approach could significantly alleviate home health monitoring for children.
